John 15:9-17 I Call You Friends (Easter VI B)

John 15:9-17 highlights the change of status of disciples to that of "friends", members of the extended household of the Son and the Father. Read the article "Remain In My Love" and reflect on this Sunday's gospel selection using the following questions:

1. "Love one another as I have loved you."
Activity: Make a list of "actions" and "attitudes" that expresses the way Jesus loved his disciples. Once you have completed your list, go over them and see which ones you can make your own.

2. "I no longer call you servants but friends."
You are a friend of Jesus; dwell on this idea for a moment. Remember the times when you sought the friendship of someone whom you thought was special. What were the reasons behind your choice for that person?

3. Reread the whole of John 15:1-17 and dwell on the following words:

  • Remain in me as I remain in you...
  • Remain in me as my words remain in you...
  • Remain in my love

The relationship of the disciples with the Lord and the disciples among themselves should be a living and loving relationship. In what ways can your own community move towards such a relationship?
