The Lord comes to your house. How would you feel? What would you do? The story of Martha and Mary as told by Luke may appear to be a story about hospitality at first, but as one proceeds to think about it, there seems to be more. Read the relevant article and use the following questions as a guide for reflection.
1. Cerezo Barredo, the illustrator of the Christian Community Bible, has an interesting depiction of the scene at Martha's house. Click on the image below for a bigger look
What do you notice in the picture? How do you explain the look of consternation in the face of Martha and the man working with her? How does Mary look? What is she doing? If you were Martha in this scene, what would you be thinking?
2. Church organizations tend to be activity oriented forgetting that the formation of members is important too. In this story, the Lord defends Mary's duty to stay at his feet and waste -- so to speak -- time with Him.
How do you see your organization? Is it more like an office where everyone has a chore to do? Or is it more like a school where "activities" are seen as part of the curriculum but not as important as learning from the Lord?
3. The Lord is present in our midst. He is always really present in the Blessed Sacrament. How do you personally sit at his feet and listen to Him as Mary did?
