In John's gospel, Peter is the Lord's lieutenant (literally, placeholder) Pastor. The three-fold profession of love in Jn. 21:15-19, is coupled with the command to follow the Lord to the cross. Within the context of Peter's commissioning in this section of John, the shepherd's love for the owner of the flock will be proven by martyrdom.
